Your move doesn’t start on moving day.
It starts 30 days before. Most moving problems — not enough boxes, building permits not arranged, address changes missed, total chaos on day one — happen because everything was left for the last minute.
This checklist breaks the process into weekly phases so you have a clear plan: what to book, what to pack first, what to confirm with building management, and what to have ready for move day.
Week 4 — Plan and book
- Confirm your moving date and book your loading and unloading service.
- Notify your building or landlord and check for time or access restrictions.
- Do a full inventory of what you’re moving, donating, or discarding.
- Get boxes, Blankets & Wrap, and packing supplies.
- Update your address with essential services (bank, employer, postal service).
Week 3 — Start packing non-essentials
- Pack decorative items, books, collections, and anything you don’t use daily.
- Label every box with its contents and destination room.
- Take photos of electronic connections before unplugging anything.
- Start clearing out drawers and closets you don’t use regularly.
- Discard, donate, or sell anything you’re not taking with you.
Week 2 — Tackle everyday items
- Pack seasonal clothing and items you won’t need this week.
- Reserve the elevator at both origin and destination buildings (if applicable).
- Verify parking or loading zone permit for moving day.
- Confirm all details with your moving company.
- Pack a first-night box with essentials: documents, chargers, toiletries, next-day clothes.
Week 1 — Final preparations
- Pack almost everything, leaving only what you need for the last few days.
- Clean and prepare the space to hand it over in good condition.
- Confirm the arrival time with your moving team.
- Make sure hallways and access points will be clear on moving day.
- Charge your phone and keep your moving company’s contact info handy.
The final 72 hours
- Finish packing everything.
- Empty all drawers and unplug appliances.
- Put your first-night box somewhere easy to grab.
- Confirm elevator reservation and building access.
- Get a good night’s sleep — move day goes much smoother when you’re rested.
Moving day
- Have everything ready before the team arrives: boxes closed, hallways clear.
- Set aside a no-move zone for personal items you’re keeping with you.
- Do a final walk-through of every room before leaving.
- Sign the service confirmation and verify everything arrived correctly.
Mini checklist by room
- Living room: sofa, TV, furniture, decor, lamps.
- Kitchen: appliances, utensils, non-perishable food.
- Bedrooms: clothes, mattress, nightstands, emptied drawers.
- Bathroom: toiletries, medications, towels.
- Home office: equipment, labeled cables, important documents.
