Not every move requires a full-service package. If you’ve already rented a truck from U- Haul, Penske, or any other provider — or if a friend or family member is handling the drive — hiring loading and unloading help only can be the most efficient decision you make: you pay only for the hours worked, stay in control of the process, and significantly cut costs.

When does loading & unloading-only make sense?
This service is a great fit for you if:

• You already have a rental truck reserved or have access to one through someone you trust.
• You’re moving locally — within the same city, neighborhood, or even building.
• You have heavy items — sofas, refrigerators, beds, wardrobes — that are impossible to move solo.
• You want to control the move but need skilled hands for the physical work.
• Your budget is tight and you want to pay only for what you actually use.
  

What’s included — and what’s not?
Knowing what to expect avoids surprises on moving day.

–  Typically included:

• Loading furniture and boxes from your current home onto the truck.
• Unloading at your new place and placing items in the rooms you specify.
• Careful handling of heavy or oversized pieces.
• Professional equipment: straps, dollies, and basic padding.

–  Typically not included:

• Packing boxes or wrapping furniture (unless contracted separately).
• Disassembly or reassembly of furniture.
• The moving truck itself (that’s on you).
• Long-distance transport (for that, consider a full-service option).

How to calculate the hours you’ll need?

This is the most important question — and the one most people underestimate. Getting it wrong can mean unexpected extra charges, or running out of time.

Quick guide by home size:

• Studio or efficiency apartment: 2 to 3 hours with 2 movers.
• 1-bedroom apartment: 3 to 4 hours with 2 movers.
• 2-bedroom apartment: 4 to 6 hours with 2–3 movers.
• Large house: 6 to 8+ hours, may require 3 or more movers.

Factors that can increase estimated time:

• Stairs with no elevator (add 30–45 min per extra floor).
• Long carry distance between the truck and the entrance (over 50 feet).
• Unlabeled boxes or items that need organizing on the spot.

Checklist before the truck arrives
To keep things running smoothly, have the following ready before the team shows up:

• All boxes closed and labeled with the destination room.
• Hallways and exits clear of any obstacles.
• Elevator reserved at your building (if applicable), both at origin and destination.
• Furniture drawers emptied (reduces weight and prevents damage).
• Parking or loading zone permit arranged in advance.
